     Within minutes of Flight 11's impact, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department (PAPD) began deploying officers from the Port Authority Trans-Hudson, bridges, tunnels, and airport commands. The PAPD commanding officer on the scene ordered a full evacuation of the North Tower at 9 a.m., about three minutes before Flight 175 hit the South Tower. At the same time, the PAPD's two most senior officers, superintendent Ferdinand Morrone and Chief James Romito, both arrived separately at the World Trade Center.

 

     Some officers were ordered into the towers to assist with stairwell evacuations, while others helped with evacuations in the plaza and subway station. Superintendent Morrone was last seen helping evacuate tenants on the 45th floor of the North Tower before it collapsed while Chief Romito was in the 31st-floor region with four colleagues helping firefighters. The PAPD lost 37 officers, including Morrone and Romito, and one police dog in the attacks:

Lieutenant Robert Dominick Cirri, 39, Nutley, N.J., USA - Lieutenant Robert Cirri was killed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks while attempting to rescue the victims trapped in the World Trade Center. The lieutenant was an instructor at the Port Authority Police Academy and had responded to the scene from Jersey City, New Jersey. He and four other officers were attempting to carry a woman to safety when the North Tower collapsed. Lieutenant Cirri is survived by his wife, six children and stepchildren, and his parents. Officer George G. Howard, 45, Hicksville, N.Y., USA - Police Officer George Howard was killed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks while attempting to rescue the victims trapped in the World Trade Center. He was off duty when he heard of the attack and rushed to the scene in order to offer his assistance. Officer Howard had also rushed to the World Trade Center while off duty following the 1993 bombing of the buildings. He was credited with saving several children during that incident. Officer Thomas Edward Jurgens, 26, Lawrence, N.Y., USA - Senior Court Officer Thomas Jurgens was killed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks while attempting to rescue the victims trapped in the World Trade Center. He had served with the New York State Office of Court Administration for three years and he had previously served as a medic with the United States Army. Officer Jurgens' uncle, Police Officer Paul Jurgens, of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department, was also killed on 9/11 while responding to the scene. Captain Kathy Nancy Mazza-Delosh, 46, Farmingdale, N.Y., USA - Captain Kathy Mazza was killed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks while attempting to rescue the victims trapped in the World Trade Center. She was leading a group of people down stairs when the building started to collapse. Using her 9mm sidearm, Captain Mazza shot out glass walls, enabling many to escape. Officer Dominick Pezzulo, 36, New York, N.Y., USA - Officer Dominick Pezzulo was killed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks while attempting to rescue the victims trapped in the World Trade Center. As the South Tower collapsed, Officer Pezzulo and several other officers quickly ran to the building's elevator shaft. Only Officer Pezzulo and two other officers survived the initial collapse, but soon afterwords Officer Pezzulo was stuck by falling debris. The two officers that survived say "Just remember me, I died trying to save you guys," were Officer Pezzulo's last words. He then fired a single shot into the air trying to let the others know where his friends were, and then died. Officer Pezzulo had served with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department for 13 months. He is survived by his wife and two young children. Port Authority Police Department..
