**‡** {John Kenneth Leveson Ross} The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing (sometimes shortened to Triple Crown, or The Triple Crown, the full name is used to avoid possible confusion with other sports) consists of three races for three–year–old Thoroughbred horses. Winning all three of these Thoroughbred horse races is considered the greatest accomplishment of a Thoroughbred racehorse. Different nations where thoroughbred racing is popular, have their own Triple Crown series. In recent years, winning a Triple Crown has become a very rare achievement, with most horses specializing on a limited range of distances. In the United States, the three races that compose the Triple Crown are:
Today 06.06.2015 in front of a capped crowd of 90.000 people a horse named { American Pharoah } with a commanding lead of 5 1/2 furlongs with an official time of 2:26.65 was the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 37 years. The Triple Crown Trophy is very distinctive and made of silver. The Triple Crown trophy has come to represent the pinnacle achievement in horseracing. Commissioned in 1950 by the Thoroughbred Racing Association, artisans at the world–famous Cartier Jewelry Company were charged with creating more than a trophy, but a true work of art. The result was a three–sided vase, each face equally representing the three jewels of the crown, and beautifully capturing the spirit of horseracing's most sought after, and rarest, honor. The three sides are engraved with specific information from each of the three races:
Upon completion of the first trophy it was awarded to the 1948 Triple Crown Winner Citation. Each year thereafter, retroactive trophies were presented to the first eight winners of the Triple Crown in reverse order until all of the previous winners or their heirs were awarded. In addition to the Triple Crown Trophy: Winners of the Kentucky Derby are given the Kentucky Derby Trophy a solid gold trophy worth in excess of: As of 2008, the Trophy was valued at $90,000 in raw materials..
